Our main event this past semester was Aaja Nachle, held on October 22nd, 2011 in the Student Union ballroom. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported PCUC! We had a pretty large turnout and we were pleased with the success of the event. We hope you all enjoyed and we’re open to any suggestions you may have about improvements for next year, if we wish to do this event again. Thanks for the support!

We realize many of you signed up to volunteer for events this semester that were not mentioned again. Just to keep everyone on the same page as the board, here’s what happened to some of those events:

1.) Tabling in the Student Union: We were going to set up tabling booths dedicated to awareness for different charitable causes, such as the earthquakes and floods of Pakistan, the Japan, Haiti, and India earthquakes, poverty in Africa, and many different global crises. We were going to set up bake sales for these events to make some money for donations to these causes but the reason these events couldn’t go through this semester was because PCUC currently does not have the license to sell food on campus (yes, even if it’s just a measly little cookie). As a relatively new board, we weren’t aware of this, so we hope to have this set for next semester.

2.) Bollywood Night in the Student Union Theater: After speaking to the Student Union about doing this event, we learned that they have a limited list of movies they will allow us to show (we can’t bring our own), and the cost of renting the theater, their movies, and their equipment would be approximately $471. After some more fundraising that we plan to do next semester, we can hopefully get this event underway by teaming up with the Indian Student Association!

3.) Community service events with UCAN – our community service chairwoman, Arti Patel, went to several of UCAN’s meetings throughout the semester and provided us with a list of various community service activities that we wanted PCUC to be involved with. However, we, as a board, all agreed that there were more opportunities for community service available that were not directly connected through UCAN, because we realized several of UCAN’s events required students to travel off campus, which we realize is difficult for most students. The Food Recovery Thanksgiving Food Drive Can Contest could not go underway either, simply due to short notice. There was no way we could have collected 200+ cans and make a structure out of them in about a week. We are continuously on the lookout for different community service opportunities, so please let us know if you find any!

Thank you so much to all of you who volunteered to help out with these events, despite the fact that some of them did not go through. We will definitely keep in touch with you all about how you can get involved with these events next semester, once all of the minor details are worked out. Until then, keep updated through www.UCONNPCUC.com and send us suggestions, questions, or comments at uconnpcuc@gmail.com. Last, but not least, remember to mark your calendars for MARCH 23RD, 2012, for PCUC’s biggest annual event: THE CULTURE SHOW! Details to come at our first general body meeting of the spring semester on JANUARY 31ST, 2012!

See you all in the spring semester! Happy New Year!
